Science and Wisdom

From particles to spheres, we know more than we ever have. However, all these things about which we have fragmentary knowledge are only enough to dispel ignorance, and ignorance remains. Lack of foresight leaves its mark on almost all human affairs, and the old world is injured more and more every day by the works of this foresight.

On the other hand, there is the wisdom that the ancient world said was "the only thing for which a free person can endure voluntary slavery." Scientism, the idea that the world can only be understood with the truths provided by science, may be nothing but a new world disease. The great contribution of the wisdom of the ancient world may be to save us from this great danger by rediscovering human values based on all forms of human experience.

Ordinary science often makes it difficult or even impossible to obtain true knowledge, with the boundaries it draws and the mental habits it acquires. We need a new understanding of justice and righteousness, and a deep understanding of what will provide the fullest, healthiest life for humans. We now need to be seriously aware of the dangers that reductive science poses to us and which we must stay away from at all costs.
