Land of White Lilies
Public memory is still an enigma: Who would have thought that the name Grigory Petrov, which resonated throughout Russia a hundred years ago, attracted admiring crowds from all over the country, and caused heated newspaper discussions, would be a name known only to expert historians a hundred years later...
Grigory Petrov became famous as a priest. His brilliant sermons and speeches were talked about throughout Petersburg. His oratorical talent was fused with literary talent. Philosopher Rozanov says the following about him: “It can be easily said that it is priest Petrov who dominates the book market, not Tolstoy and Maxim Gorky; He was the most popular preacher in St. Petersburg and loved by the common people...”
Petrov emigrated from Crimea at the end of 1920. He wrote his book, which will keep his name alive even after his death, in 1923. The book lived an adventurous life that was at least as surprising as that of its author. The Land of White Lilies is Finland. But it is not the Finland that Petrov knew very well and lived in for a long time, but an ideal state, the "promised land", a perfect utopia that must be visited no matter what. Because, according to Petrov, Finland emerged from poverty and impossibility and built an ideal society in the fields of economy, politics and culture thanks to its citizens, "architects of life," people who work tirelessly.
This striking novel is a guide to the "renewal of life"...
