I am Claudius
In I, Claudius, published in 1934, Graves describes the periods of Augustus, Tiberius and Caligula as if it were written by Claudius, the fourth emperor of Rome. While the author combined real events with novel fiction, he took care to ensure that his work was compatible with historical facts. I, Claudius took its place in the lists of the hundred best novels written in the English language prepared by Modern Library and Time magazine.
Claudius, who was kept away from social life by his family because of his stuttering, lameness and shyness, and whose mental abilities were suspected for a long time due to these features, was intelligent and well-equipped, contrary to the common opinion about him. He spent his time writing and reading Greek works and grew up as a historian by profession.
Graves creates a good-hearted and lovable character that the reader can empathize with, from Claudius, who owes his survival to being thought of as a harmless idiot in the Roman Empire, where the lust for power knew no bounds and where all kinds of intrigue, order and murder were rampant.
