Bedeni, Toplumu, Kainatı Yazmak
The roots of contemporary Turkey's culture are inevitably sought in its history. In this book, which compiles İrvin Cemil Schick's articles that have previously appeared in books and periodicals published in English, several dimensions of the cultural "alloy" that has many components are discussed. In Schick's articles, some elements that Turkish culture inherited from Islamic religion and culture, such as the central importance of writing, rules determining dress, the meaning of the harem institution, and literary expressions of sexuality, are examined from different perspectives.
The main element that connects these studies and ensures the integrity of the book is the unity of methodology and perspective rather than unity of subject. In studies bearing the traces of thinkers such as Michel Foucault, Edward Said and Raymond Williams, culture is approached as a system of representations; Social reality is treated as a text that is constantly produced and reproduced by "authors" with certain political positions. According to Schick, people from various walks of life who read these emerging texts in different ways depending on their positions experience social life in different ways. Schick's linguistic approach does not question the materiality of social reality; On the contrary, the author's articles in this book emphasize above all the material foundations of the texts.
