Beginnings - Intention and Method
The most important work in the field of literary criticism by Edward W. Said, who is known in our country mostly for his critical studies on Orientalism and the Palestinian issue, is Beginnings. In this book, Said tries to write a work by reading the works of great poets such as Milton, Hopkins, Wordsworth and novelists such as Dickens, Hardy, Conrad, Mann and Proust from a very unique theoretical perspective that he developed especially based on Vico, Auerbach and Foucault. It analyzes the philological, philosophical, psychological and historical dimensions of "initiation".
In this book, as in all his works, Said refuses to separate literature from history, philosophy and social discourse, and offers a bright example of what literary criticism can gain thanks to this refusal.
