Dersim in the press
When the first operation was carried out against Dersim in 1937, it was presented to the public as a military operation against an "ignorant", "backward", "old-time" and "traitor" group. This perception remained unchanged for many years. However, as the Dersim events began to be examined in detail, many unknown or falsely known facts began to come to light. In his book Dersim in the Press, Taha Baran discusses how the misperception created about Dersim and Dersimli people was built and how it is maintained. Baran, who examined all issues of eleven different newspapers from January 1937 to January 1938, examined the ways in which Dersim events were represented by the newspapers; It evaluates the images, mental codes and thought patterns around which news and articles are conveyed. How the deaths are legitimized, how Dersim and Dersimli people are coded as an "internal enemy" that needs to be destroyed, how the dominance of the "internal orientalist" perspective, closed-circuit censorship, how the state discourse, which is accepted without question, reproduces itself over and over again by becoming media discourse, all these. It is a good source to watch the inconsistencies in the process through the media of the period. Three more rebellious marauders also surrendered to the uterine laws of the republic. (Yeni Asir, June 18, 1937) It is necessary to inject new Turkish blood into Dersim... (Son Posta, June 19, 1937) Those who escape from the sun of civilization and climb the mountain tops cannot escape the fire of that civilization coming down from the sky. (Yeni Köroglu, 21 June 1937) Those who know a little about Dersim and Dersim's past say: 'No good can come from these men, they should all be destroyed...' (Kurun, 8 July 1937) The people of this place, who have been living a primitive life for centuries, are gaining the light of civilization. (News, July 17, 1937)
