Barolar ve Siyaset
Turkey has become a country that talks and discusses a decision made by the judiciary almost every day or wakes up to a judicial scandal every morning. However, the characteristics of the institutions that constitute the different branches of the judiciary in Turkey are not well known, and there are no studies that go into detail on this subject with different views other than the generally accepted views. Very little is known about the largest group among these components, namely lawyers and bar associations, which are professional organizations.
However, just as lawyers are the most populous professional group in the Turkish Grand National Assembly, the fact that they have the most accessible professional structure and characteristics for citizens compared to judges and prosecutors puts them in a different status in society. Asst. Assoc. Dr. Idil Elveris's work titled Bar Associations and Politics examines the relationship between the Union of Turkish Bar Associations and state institutions through interviews with people who have served as bar association presidents and managers, while also shedding light on politics and interest group structure in Turkey. How does a profession that is so intertwined with politics get what it wants from politics, with what values does it define itself, and how is it affected by social, political and economic change? What does seeing what lawyers experience with judges and prosecutors in the courts being repeated on an institutional basis in the relations between the Ministry of Justice and the Turkish Bar Association tell us about state behavior in Turkey? Is being a lawyer forgotten when you become a member of parliament? Why is the Union of Turkish Bar Associations not as respected as TOBB in the eyes of state institutions? While the book in your hand tries to find answers to these questions, it also advocates an understanding outside the established views.
