Unamuno devoted all his efforts to reflecting the dramas of people in their inner worlds caused by their concerns about immortality and their desire to know themselves. His novel is intended to help them discover themselves. Unamuno states: “Actually, the topic is not necessary to address very deep issues. Because real novels don't have endings. Since all the novels I have written do not end with an absolute conclusion, the reader who is unhappy is not worthy of being my reader. What is finished is perfect, it is death.
