If he hadn't encountered the bitter side of life so early, Raymond Carver would undoubtedly still be a writer, but he would never have been embraced by his readers in this way. He was married with two children at an age when young people were acting out and chasing frivolous loves. The way to learn about life was to work at any job he could find. He worked at a gas station, as a janitor, and as a waiter. When the experiences were put on paper, sometimes it tasted like Chekhov, sometimes like Kafka...
