Fear of Mirrors
Lovers want to know the truth, but they are never willing to express it. This is also the relationship of some leftists with communism. Like the end of a long and traumatic love affair, when they finally had the freedom to express the truth, they realized that they would not want to hear it anymore.
"Fear of Mirrors" is a novel that Tarik Ali describes as 'an attempt to write a European novel' and which blends the adventure of the left from the 1920s until today with all its rises and falls. Vlady, a former dissident who was fired from his job because he refused to give up his socialist beliefs in the new and united Germany, tries to explain what his family's long and passionate relationship with communism means in the letters he writes to his estranged son Karl. As the novel progresses, Vlady reveals the hopes aroused by the Bolshevik Revolution within the political upheavals of the twentieth century and tries to reveal the unbearable reality of those who betrayed communism.
