A traveler who follows the voice singing an aria he hears while wandering around the seafaring neighborhood of a port city in France and delves into the morbid lives of people he does not know; a dark, repulsive and wild servant who is dragged into a terrible act because of his slavish devotion to his boss; a French colonel who is wounded in the war in Spain in 1810 and embarks on a relentless struggle for survival in a hostile country; a Russian prisoner of war who is found and rescued in Lake Leman on a summer night in 1918, but later succumbs to the longing for his homeland that burns his heart; the heavy price paid by a young vagabond who is still attending high school while his peers are attending university and rebelling against the authority of his teacher. While Zweig traces the experiences in these stories that dehumanize people and push them to the extreme, he inevitably draws the reader into the spiritual turmoil of his characters…
