National Awakening in Europe
Miroslav Hroch begins his work by describing how nationalism developed in Central and Northern Europe, but with an important difference: he focuses specifically on the period of national agitation before the beginning of the mass national movement. By making various comparisons, he clarifies the similarities and differences. By dividing the nation-building process into phases, it offers a modeling that contains mind-opening answers and expansions in many respects. Thus, he discusses the historical importance of nationalist intellectuals, activists, publications and associations and their continuity as political actors. It also classifies the roles and effectiveness measures of groups and classes that stand out in the construction of national identities within this modelling. It explains under what conditions and why propaganda and national agitation were accepted at that time and reached the status of a mass movement. He examines how and in what way the leading nationalist groups transformed within different cultural and political developments, and uses quantitative data. An increasing number of people have a common culture, destiny (a common memory), language, social experience, etc. He draws us the historical panorama of his identification with an equal group of citizens held together by bonds.
