Questioning a person's empathy is questioning their humanity and identity. It is also a question of how much of a person's humanity can be maintained despite the physical and mental damage they have suffered.
In his shocking report entitled “ Are They Humans Too? ” Primo Levi wrote that he was ashamed that Auschwitz was conceived and carried out by humans. Yet this was neither the beginning nor the end of such shame. This shame began with the massacre of children in ancient times, and continues today with the violence and rape of women and children in South America, Africa, the former Yugoslavia, Russia, the Near East, and Indonesia; and in Europe, with the excesses stemming from xenophobia and the violence inflicted by children on children, it is still a part of daily life. The current political situation oscillates between the reinforcement of bureaucratic domination on the one hand, and the outbursts of anger caused by helplessness on the other. - ER Wolf, Diamond 1976 -
Why are economic collapse, wars, destruction, hatred, fratricide, violence, drug consumption, crime, contempt for women and children, cruelty and oppression increasing all over the world? Can this be reduced to national, economic and technological problems? No. It has to do with our definition of what makes a human being human, our own understanding of being human. We proudly call the environment we live in “civilization”, but the laws and powers that prevail within civilization have developed an independent entity from us, targeting our spiritual and physical well-being.
Why don't we learn from the past? Despite living in the information society age and the high level of science, why can't we leave the past behind?
Empathy is a barrier that separates us from our inhumanity. The history of our civilization is not only intertwined with the suppression and fragmentation of compassion, but also forms its basis. The history of civilization is also the history of empathy and its development, to which this book is dedicated.
