The thirteen stories in the book, which we present as examples of Lawrence's genius in storytelling, were written between 1924 and 1928. Lawrence recounts his experiences in New Mexico, Mexico, Italy, Germany and England after World War I. The author creates the majority of the characters in his stories by drawing inspiration from people in his immediate circle, especially his own wife. This fiction reflects DH Lawrence's great power of observation and his ability to perfectly place real events and characters in a fictional texture.
The stories set in different countries, different environments and different social structures poetically express the common power of disappointments, orphanhood, dissatisfaction and love that people experience no matter where they are in the world.
