Assyrian Literature
"The Assyrian language is within the group of Semitic languages known as Aramaic. During the time of Alexander the Great, it was the language spoken by the people in Asia Minor, Iran, Armenia and the Arabian peninsula. The Persians (Selusians) were forced to defend their place beyond the Euphrates against the Persians due to their internal strife. When he gave up, independent principalities dominated by Aramaic emerged in Babylonia and Mesopotamia. The most famous of these new states was the kingdom of Edessa*, whose capital was Urhoy. Under the influence of Christianity, Edessa's Aramaic language was early adopted. It developed and became the religious and literary language of all the Eastern churches from the Mediterranean to the Persian Gulf. After the invasion of the Muslim Arabs, Arabic became the official language in Syria and gradually replaced Aramaic. "The language became the church language and literary language after the 13th century." from the introduction of the book.
