The End of Love - Modern Classics 153
The End of Love has won the admiration of readers from different generations since its publication in 1951. At that time, Graham Greene's II. Memories of World War II are still vivid. In this passionate forbidden love story set in the atmosphere of wartime London, he pursues themes such as love, hate, loyalty and the place of "sacredness" in human life. The novel also includes a painful and shocking questioning of the contradictions inherent in Catholicism, which Greene chose of his own free will at a young age. The relationship between Maurice Bendrix, a novelist like his creator, and his married lover Sarah Miles ended with a sudden decision by Sarah, following an air raid in 1944. Two years later, Bendrix hires a detective to follow Sarah after his love rekindles with an unexpected encounter. Greene makes our heads spin by blending stream of consciousness and traditional narrative techniques with frequent flashbacks in "this story that has no beginning or end." The novel is dedicated to Catherine Walston, with whom Greene had an affair in real life. The second adaptation of Love's End, which was adapted for the big screen twice, by Irish director Neil Jordan in 1999, has taken its place among the unforgettable films.
