Ellis Hock, who began to question his life when he was abandoned by his wife at the age of 62, finds the solution in returning to East Africa, where he spent the happiest days of his youth. The village in the Lower Shire region of Malawi has undergone a great change in the intervening years, all the innovations Hock introduced during his time have been destroyed, and time has virtually flown backwards. The villagers who welcomed Hock, whom they knew as the White Man Not Afraid of Snakes, have also changed, turning into more open-eyed, more demanding and more dangerous people.
