Artemisia Gentileschi is a real historical figure who lived at the beginning of the 17th century, one of the few female painters in the history of painting.


While Anna Banti describes the painter around a small number of cases, she constantly questions her own position as a writer throughout the book. When the manuscripts of the novel were lost as a result of an air raid in 1944, Banti rewrote the novel; But this time, she included her own story and added a deep intellectual dimension to the novel, which she continued by talking to her character about the state of womanhood, painting and narrative arts, and to what extent we can understand "a life". It was this "modernist", self-reflective dimension in the narrative perspective that caused excitement among respected critics such as Susan Sontag when it was rediscovered years after it was first published.
