Artamonovs
Gorky, one of the most important literary figures of his time with his keen observation, his ability to create lively characters and his unique knowledge of the lower classes of Russian society based on personal experience, is one of the Soviet writers who did not lose his interest in the pre-1917 period even after the revolution. In The Artamonovs, published in 1925 and described as his most impressive and dramatic novel, Gorky deals with the rise and fall of pre-revolutionary Russian capitalism. Ilya Artamonov, who gained his freedom after the abolition of serfdom, started his own business and tried to pass on values such as hard work and humility to his sons. In this family saga, Gorki tells the three-generation story of the Artamonovs, from the uneducated but strong and enterprising grandfather, who started with a small factory and expanded his business, to the intellectual and revolutionary grandson.
