Car Love - Critical Edition
Recaizade Mahmut Ekrem's Araba Sevdası is one of the most original examples of a writer who witnessed his own age expressing a social criticism through a novel.
Araba Sevdası, whose first draft is estimated to have been written in 1889, serialized in Servet-i Fünun in 1896, and then published as a book in 1898, is the most important Turkish novel that came to the fore in the post-Tanzimat period. In the novel, which takes place during the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz, the "traffic dandy" type seen in the heiress circles of Istanbul is exaggerated and placed in a love story. In this critical edition, in addition to the pictures in the original of Araba Sevdası, the differences between the serial and the book, and texts, maps and pictures that clarify the sources and references of the novel are also included.
"What makes Recaizade Ekrem unique among his contemporaries is that he wrote a novel that turns all action into inaction, all imitation into failure, emotion into pointless sentimentality, and dream - which includes creativity - into non-existence."
