Babylonian sources tell us that “Cyrus of Anshan, a Median vassal, dispersed the military units of the Medes.” Winning the victory, Cyrus managed to capture the Median King Astyages and capture his capital Ecbatana, looting the treasury and taking the spoils to Anshan.
Thus Cyrus and his successors created the largest empire in the Middle East and initiated centuries of Persian rule, stretching from Macedonia to the Indian lands.
The general picture of “Ancient Persia” presented in this book is based on the comprehensive concept of “Persia”. However, it does not limit it to the territory of the present-day Iranian state, but also includes the territories inhabited by the Achaemenid, Parthian and Sassanid empires of the ancient Iranian peoples. Some of them are within the borders of today’s Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.
While the author presents the empires that ruled the region to the reader in chronological order, he also found it important to include a short summary of important documents at the beginning of each section, as this would enable the development of knowledge about what is known and newly discovered in inscriptionally and archaeologically.
“Ancient Persian History” reveals the power struggles from the 5th century BC until the collapse of the Sassanid Empire, as well as the social life, culture, administrative rules and economic conditions of the people living in the region in the light of numerous findings and documents.
