Anabasis - Return of the Ten Thousand
Xenophon (c. 432 BC - 355 BC): Athenian writer, historian, commander. He took a stand against democratic government, blaming his city's defeat in the Peloponnesian War on the lack of discipline resulting from democracy. He fought on the side of Sparta against the Athenians in the Battle of Koroneia in 394 BC. Thereupon, he was accused of treason and exiled, and all his property was confiscated. Xenophon, a student of Socrates, wrote his first work to defend his teacher after his unjust death. The author's main books include The Education of Cyrus and Tyranny on statesmanship, Hellenica and the State of the Lacedaemons on the Spartans, and On Economics on household management. His most well-known work is Anabasis - The Return of the Ten Thousand, in which the Persian prince Cyrus turns to his older brother II to seize power. It tells the story of the war and the return home adventure of the Greek soldiers who participated in the expedition against Artaxerkes. Anabasis, in which Xenophon narrates his memories and experiences, is the diary of a great military expedition, most of which took place in Anatolia.
