Gorky, who is considered the leading name of proletarian novelists in Russia, is also considered the pioneer of socialist reality, which will be accepted as the official literary movement in the Soviet Union for a long time, thanks to the same novel. In his letter to his friend Desnitsky in March 1933, Gorky said; He states that while he was in Nizhni Novgorod at the time, he decided to write a novel about workers, about the May 1 demonstration held in Sormovo, a workers' district of the city, and the events that followed, and that he started collecting some materials and keeping notes in the same year. Pyotr Zalomov, who leads the show in question and appears as Pavel in the novel, and Savva Morozov, the author's fabricator friend, made significant contributions to this material collection process. While Zalomov gave information about the May 1 demonstration and the subsequent arrests and court process, Morozov gave information about the living conditions of the factory workers through the letters of the workers working in his factory.
