Mother
Back Cover Text (From the Promotional Bulletin)
Maxim Gorky's revolutionary novel titled Mother, which has never lost its importance and value, is one of the most important masterpieces of the social realist literature genre. Mother tells the struggle of the proletariat against the tsar and the capitalists, which eventually led to the October Revolution, in the context of the transformation of a humble mother into a passionate activist. The novel is structured around two real events: the May 1 demonstration in Sormovo in 1902 and the trial of those who participated in this demonstration. Gorky chose to tell the story from a mother's point of view, instead of the activist heroes of the events. The reason for this is the approach of giving a message to the working class more easily. Gorky aimed to break the timidity of working class people and encourage them by showing that everyone could be an activist and contribute to the revolution. Additionally, other women who turn their backs on the opportunities provided by the bourgeois class and join the struggle also play an important role in the novel. Thus, we read in Gorky's masterful style that the revolutionary struggle rises on the shoulders of not only men but also women.
