Amphitryon
Heinrich von Kleist, one of the greatest writers of the transition phase from the classical period to romanticism in German literature, deals with an old theme dating back to the Latin comedy writer Plautus, the "cheated husband-innocent woman despite her infidelity" theme in his play "Amphitryon". Kleist, who adheres in principle to the fiction of Moliere's play of the same name in his own text, has managed to give the work, with a few changes, an atmosphere that is very different from Moliere's and completely reflects his own era. In addition to being one of Kleist's most powerful works, "Amphitryon" is also important in that it shows how a very old subject, whose origins go back to classical Greek mythology, has always been brought to the agenda again throughout the course of world literary history.
