William Saroyan from America to Bitlis
World-famous story, play and novel writer William Sarohan's relationship with Bitlis, from which his family had to leave in 1905, tells much more than a search for belonging; it tells the story of a people, perhaps all people who were uprooted from their homeland...
In this resource book dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Saroyan's birth, which reflects Saroyan's identity as a writer, his unique personality, his artistic spirit and world view, different writers draw very different portraits of Saroyan.
Just like Saroyan's works, this collection of writings, some of which are optimistic and enthusiastic, while others are hesitant and challenging, can be considered a kind of guide that tries to understand the author's life, inner world, joy of life, longings, and the bright and dark sides of his personality.
In addition to the play "Bitlis", which the author wrote in recent years, this compilation includes the writings of Ara Güler, Dickran Kouymjian, Bedros Zobyan, Fikret Otyam, Garip Basmadjian and Stephen D. Calonne.
The traces of Saroyan's trip to Anatolia and Bitlis in 1964 are conveyed through the pens of the journalist Fikret Otyam and Marmara Newspaper editor Bedros Zobyan, who accompanied him. Poet Garig Basmadjian's long interview with Saroyan provides clues about his perspective on life and art.
In addition to the articles that focus on Saroyan's writing, the articles written by photographer Ara Güler and his close friend Dickran Kouymjian after his death, together with numerous photographs, testify to the originality of Saroyan's world.
