The Sixth Ward in the mental hospital managed by Doctor Ragin is a special section where locked patients are kept. When he started working at the institution, Doctor Ragin tried to fight against the disorder, prevailing filth, lack of hygiene and decay, but after a while he became discouraged and preferred to leave the patients to their fate. One day, when he meets Gromov, an educated patient and one of the residents of this ward, by chance, the friendship they establish and their conversations that last for hours disturb many people in the hospital, especially the young Doctor Hobotov. Doctor Ragin is now the focus of a series of events that he cannot understand.
The Sixth Ward, written by Chekhov, the great master of the story, with his realistic approach about the moral collapse of the Russian society, its insensitivity, and the disconnection of the Russian intellectual from the people, who are content to watch the problems instead of taking action, is a deep social analysis.
