'Iraklis Mantakas was the greatest lord of the islands and Anatolia when he was alive. His fame as a merchant extended up to Izmir and down to Antalya and further afield. Most of the people of the island and others from Anatolia were working for him: in his farms and workplaces, still others were working in the seas, in his fields and gardens to bring him sponges. He was dead, but his dominance in people's souls still continued and he frightened them. This was what happened a year ago, when they brought him in a coffin from Halicarnassus (Bodrum) on the boat of his faithful man Theodosis, and even more.
