It all begins in Chickentown, the most boring place in the world. Candy Quackenbush, who is looking for a clue about what will happen in the future, also lives there. The answer Candy gets is not at all what she expected. Suddenly a wave comes and Candy jumps into the turbulent waters and is swept away, led by a man named John Mischief, whose brothers live in the horns above his head. So where to? To ABARAT; into a vast sea of islands where each island has a different time of day. As Candy travels from one fabulous place to another, she makes close friends and encounters dangerous enemies: mechanical insects, giant moths, supernatural cats and mud men, a murderous wizard and his terrified minion... And so Candy begins to realize something. He's been here before. Candy is in this extraordinary world for a reason: she will help save Abarat from the dark forces. These are forces older than time itself, and they are more evil than anything Candy has ever encountered before. Candy knows he's a strange hero. But isn't the world strange?
