Summer 1939
The war bell rang and the actors took their places on the stage. The roles are outlined but not fully written; It will just be improvised. Because every actor, from the star to the spear holder, wants to play a role in this play and say the last tirade himself. The curtain rises before the eyes of the whole world on the Polish Radio station on September 1, 1939. A German shell silences the Chopin melodies coming from Szpilman's piano - like Polanski's "The Pianist". The same play begins to be staged in different venues. The Second World War has begun.
However, that year was not much different from others. Life goes on for ordinary people who remain apart from what is said behind closed doors... Those who are not ordinary either do not care much about the war or have taken their place in a world where they were already exiles...
On March 30, Bertolt Brecht received information from atomic physicist Niels Bohr in Denmark for his last play, Galileo Galilei. Jorge Semprún is only fifteen years old. 82-year-old Freud had to leave his country because he was threatened because he was Jewish. Thomas Mann continues to fight the Hitler regime from America, where he was exiled...
In the Summer of 1939, Biermann takes you by the hand and takes you on a walk on the road to war. Sometimes the bullet grazes your shoulder, sometimes it pierces your shoulder... You get angry at those who remain silent about the war, you greet those who are against it, you share the pain, you feel the war inside you.
