Revolution of 1908
In this book, the story of the road to the 1908 Revolution is told. The definition of "2nd Constitutional Monarchy" accepted in Turkish historiography is far from reflecting the scale of the political transformation that took place in 1908. Because in 1908, there was a change of political regime that went beyond the framework of "constitutionalism". The government has now become responsible only to a popularly elected parliament. The absolutist monarchy and the bureaucracy that served it began to be excluded from the political process for the first time. Aykut Kansu argues that, with these aspects, 1908 was a more important, "real" turning point in Turkish history than 1923. By saying this, he also makes a radical criticism of the condescending view of official historiography - as well as the established opposition historiography - towards this turning point. The main subject of the book is the process that prepared the 1908 Revolution. We see that this process witnessed a serious social opposition movement that spread across a wide geography and different social segments. The description of this wave of opposition that gave birth to 1908, based on very rich material, proves once again that history is the wisest teacher and the most entertaining novel. "1908 Revolution" constitutes the first link of Aykut Kansu's works "patterning" our recent history.
