Life begins to return to normal in post-war America. Young people who graduated from university a few years ago meet in New York to go to the biggest student prom to be held after the war. While the young people are having fun in the sumptuous ballroom, two soldiers who have just returned from the war, looking for ways to break the alcohol ban in the small room at the back, watch this crazy world from the doorway. The mob gathered on the opposite corner of the street attacked socialist journalists who wrote anti-war articles. People from different walks of life, who seem impossible to come together, meet in the center of New York on the night of May 1, 1919, as a result of various coincidences, and sometimes knowingly and sometimes unknowingly, they intervene in each other's lives. On May 1, which was first published in 1920 and later included in Jazz Age Stories, Fitzgerald creates a striking story by bringing together three events that took place the previous year and that affected him greatly.
