May 1, 1977
On May 1, 1977, the Labor Day celebrations organized by DISK in Taksim were attacked. Fire was opened on the crowd, bullets rained down, panzers marched, 34 people died and hundreds were injured... While the government, police and media held the leftists responsible for what happened, as if in unanimity; The view that the incident was a cold-blooded provocation gradually became dominant among unions, DISK and most left-wing organizations. This bloody incident left a deep mark on the left movement; It led to the deepening of some divisions within the left. Despite the years that passed, what exactly happened in the field remained largely unknown, and the real perpetrators were never held accountable.
The book, which is a documentary that tries to shed light on what happened in Taksim that day and also touches upon what happened in Turkey before and after, consists of interviews. Korhan Atay, who personally witnessed the events, met with thirteen people from different politics: Ahmet Sami Belek, Bingöl Erdumlu, Dinçer Doğu, Dogan Ülgen, Feyyaz Kursuncu, Gün Zileli, Kamil Arslantürk, Leman Firtina, Mahir Sayın, Mehmet Karaca, Murat Belge, Murat Tokmak. and Osman Cavit Iyigun. The vast majority of them were influential figures in the unions, groups and political movements they were a part of at the time.
In this book, you will come face to face with the multidimensional painting of May 1, 1977, drawn for the first time by giving different perspectives the right to speak. To contribute to the effort to correct a recent history written with lies...
